Tonight I'll be seeing
McLibel at the Lumiere in SF. It will be a bit nostalgic for me, because that was the year I explored many animal rights groups in London, and later that year left for Califonia. 'McLibel' was the big news that year.
In 1986, a group of activists in London handed out a leaflet condemning McDonald’s. Little attention might have been paid to their modest campaign had the company not decided to sue the activists, alleging libel. Under pressure, three of them apologized to McDonald’s, but Dave Morris and Helen Steel refused. The lengthy trial of the unassuming and sympathetic duo — captured in this stirring and sometimes funny documentary — helped fuel a global grassroots movement against fast-food companies.
